Program notes:
Stylized as “1.0” to mimic computer software, "Cel1.0: Sound Driver" is a piece for two cellos and a drum set. It is based on hardstyle music, a genre of EDM with a quick, upbeat tempo, an extremely prominent four-on-the-floor beat, and a bass line that doubles the abrasive, punchy kick drum. The piece has an exciting beat and a driving sound, which is where the inspiration for the name originated.
My goal with this piece was to write for instruments that I had not previously had substantial experience composing for. As a new undergraduate music student, I had not given string writing a serious try until now. The challenge in writing this piece came from my dedication to both idiomatic cello writing and authenticity to the genre I was mimicing.
Compromises were made in my original sketches of the music due to the abilities of the instrument I was composing for. On the upside however, for the same reason I was able to write and expand ideas that I never knew were possible. I believe that I had written a performer and audience experience that perfectly shows off the flexibility of the cello. Therefore, I would say that this piece is dedicated to the cello as a musical instrument, along with its performers that wield it and bring it to life.
